The Zanzibar plant, also known as the Emerald plant, is a tropical perennial plant native to easter Africa, from southern Kenya to northeast South Africa.

The ZZ plant is ideal for beginner plant caretakers. They go perfectly in homes and offices as they are low maintenance, tolerate neglect, and accept low light conditions. A NASA study shows they detox the air from large amounts of chemicals like xylene, toluene, and benzene.

This super forgiving house plant requires low levels of light and it is best to avoid direct sunlight. The ZZ plant can be watered every 7 to 14 days, but can also be watered once a month. In order to avoid overwatering and causing damage allow the soil to become dry from the top between watering. It’s recommended to use liquid fertilizer, 20-20-20, once a month when watering.

The ZZ plant is believed to be a symbol of good fortune and luck with its thick and textured leaves.
