Surprisingly, tobacco smoke is still a thing people do even though the effects are fatal. Fortunately, plants can be very effective in cleaning the toxic chemicals that accompany tobacco smoke. ETS contains over 40 chemicals that are released into the atmosphere - some of them being carcinogens. Secondhand smoke can affect those who didn't make the choice to smoke in the first place; that is one of the main reasons why being able to diminish the affects of it is vital. Here are the two main effects of ETS:
- respiratory tract ailments in children
- lung cancer in nonsmoking adults
Respiratory tract ailments in children
ETS affects the children and their development. It is the saddest aftermath of smoking simply because a child has no real choice but to stand by and receive secondhand smoke. It wasn't the infants conscious choice to inhale the smoke. Sadly, here are some of the more detailed diseases a child can develop if exposed to ETS:
- Pneumonia
- Bronchitis
- Asthma
- Middle-ear disease
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Plants to the rescue!
Plants might go around being unnoticed for the most part, but they are humanities best friend; moreover, they can be a nonsmoking adult and a child's life-saver. By filtering out bad chemicals that they turn into oxygen, they are preventing the ETS to maliciously enter a victim's lungs. Also, as previously stated, they release filtered oxygen that can help everybody- yes, even the smoker could use some fresh air. They also help clean the lingering smell faster!
Here are a list of some of the plants that can help aid ETS:
- Umbrella tree
- Bamboo palm
- Golden pathos
- Chinese evergreen
- Spider plant
- English ivy
- Golden pothos
